RIP Gaylord

by MIke Griak | Nov 28, 2022 | Inside Cover

The great Gaylord Perry passed away this week at 84 years old. He is probably best known for his “spitball”, but he had a remarkable 22-year, Hall-of-Fame career. His consistency resulted in 314 victories, two Cy Young Awards and an incredible 5,350 innings pitched including 303 complete games. He was the first to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues, winning in 1972 with the Indians and in 1978 with the Padres. On a side note, when his then 5-year old daughter was asked if he threw a spitter, she replied that it’s a “hard slider”. We won’t see a character like him again.
